Tesla's Electrical Engineer

Tesla is known for being the number one electric car corporation. There is many positions Tesla can offer me as an electrical engineer. My position at a corporation like Tesla would be working on instrumentation and controls which go hand and hand. They both require the use of sensors to make sure every part in the vehicle works in a synchronized manner. Instrumentation in a car is mainly located on the dashboard for example the light that tells you if your low on gas or the speedometer that reads how fast you are going. It is an important part of the vehicle since it goes hand and hand with the control systems placed on the center counsel of the vehicle. This center counsel is a 17- inch digital screen that reduces the amount of button controls in the car making it easier for the consumer to use. In my chosen position an ethical thing to do would be to make sure the instrumentation in the car is not faulty and easy to use for the consumers. I would also have to consider the total cost of the product isn't to high and make sure that it is still of quality for the consumer.

In my chosen position it is ethical to make sure that the product is bug free no matter how tedious it may be to debug the control system because it is my responsibility to look out for the consumer's safety. For example if I'm working on the dashboard of the car and I want to make a digital display of the speedometer, it would be my job to build it as best as i can. If it is not build correctly it may endanger the life of the consumer or any other person by displaying the incorrect speed in a school zones or a curve that requires you to be going at 40 miles per hour instead of 60 miles per hour. The controls system involves a lot of work that will make the car work in a synchronized manner for example making sure that the sensors are working properly and on time because if they were to fail it may have a big impact on the efficiency and safety of the whole vehicle.

Joshua Brown, the first person to die in a self-driving car accident.Tesla's have autonomous driving technology and on May 7 an accident occurred in Witson, Florida, after the drive, Joshua Brown, 40, put his model S into Tesla mode and died in a car accident.   An ethical thing for the company to do is broadcast this to people with a reasonable explanation before selling $2B of stock in the same month of the fatal accident. Although usually it takes about a 8% failure rate for a company to publicly issue a recall on an automobile it is still ethical not to hide this from the public because if there is a good reasonable explanation, there is nothing to hide. In my position the ethical thing to do as an employee is urge my coworkers to stand up with me and make the Tesla publicize the accident.

My ethical responsibility as a Tesla employee is to contribute to the companies well being and further enrich their success. My ethical responsibility to the environment as a Tesla employee will be to further contribute with new environmentally friendly ideas. They are already doing so by replacing fuel emission into the air with clean electric car, but to contribute further. For example I may suggest to change the material that the wheels are made of since it causes environmental damage when burned and recycled.

  1. I believe your blog describes the ethical responsibilities you would have as an engineer for Tesla. However, you definitely need to go back and reword most of it. The grammar used throughout was flawed. Also with regards to the car accidents, large automotive companies like Tesla or Toyota operate off of percentages. Usually it takes about a 8% failure rate for a company to publicly issue a recall on an automobile. This usually ends up being a few thousand cases in which this technical failure occurs. I understand the concern from the perspective f the individual, but as a multi-million dollar company selling hundreds of thousands of units the cost of a recall is far to substantial to justify a recall because of one case. But these are the kinds of ethical dilemmas you will run into as an engineer.

    1. Thank you for your advice Isaiha, I have gone through the blog to revision the grammar and wording. It is one of my flaws, but ill try my best to do my best. I also included the answer to your response where you mention it usually takes about a 8% failure rate for a company to publicly issue a recall on an automobile.

  2. You show a good working knowledge of Tesla products. Please use more paragraphs and make sure each of your different ethical considerations have time to breathe. After all, whether or not a dashboard feature is working is much different than an internal speed regulator, but these seem to be two very different issues. Use paragraphs!
