How To Get Started with Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Super Smash Bros for the Wii U  is a very interesting game with an interesting community that is growing with the newer sport category of e-Sports. Super Smash Bros for Wii U was intended to be a party game but it started to bloom more as a competitive game. However, before even getting to the point of playing Competitive Smash Bros, this guide will help you start playing the game.

STEP 1: Buying the Game and Console
Buying the game and the console is crucial at the moment in order to play the game because without these two items it will be very difficult to play the game yourself. You will need at least 1 copy of the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U which is the game and for the console you will need a Nintendo Wii U. There is also a Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and you could buy that copy of the game for the console Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 2DS, or New Nintendo 2DS which is a handheld/portable console. Pick which ever fits more for you; however, if you choose Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and you plan on join tournaments they might not allow you to play with the Nintendo 3DS Version since the Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 2DS, and the New Nintendo 2DS might not be valid controllers. This all depend on the TO (Tournament Organizer) rule set. (I would personally recommend the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U since the video quality and comfort is much better than playing it on the Nintendo 3DS.) This Guide will be primarily focusing on the Wii U Version. If you would like to play with a GameCube Controller then you are going to need a GameCube Adapter.

STEP 2: A Place to Play
After buying the game and the console you will need to find a place to play. make sure that the power outlet and the television is in a convenient place to connect the power wall adapter of the system to the outlet and the HDMI cable could reach the T.V in addition place the Wii U Console somewhere it will not bother anyone and to keep it safe from falling and potentially break.

STEP 3: Getting the Game Started
Insert the game in the disc drive and turn your Wii U on. Once you are in the Wii U Home Menu click on the Smash Bros icon in order to play the game.
Where the disc is at would normally be the place where the game would be at. Click on it and the the game should start.

STEP 4: Smash Menu
Once the game loads you would see the Smash Bros Title Screen and just press start. Once entering you will be seeing the Super Smash Bros Menu Screen where you could try various modes that Super Smash Bros has to offer like the Online feature where you could play against different players around the world. Smash Tour where it is a little board game with mini games. Games and more which allows you to play Classic Mode and AllStars. But in order to start head over to the BIG red shape in the screen that same SMASH.

After you will reach the Smash Menu and then click Smash. 8 Player is the same thing only that you could play with 4 more players in the mode only that not all the maps support this mode. Special Smash allows you to customize the way you want to play, but first lets start by understanding the buttons. So click on Smash.

STEP 5: Character Select Screen
After step 4 you should reach this part of the game where you get to choose the character you want to play. The game offers 50+ characters to play as. Choose one you will like to play. If you are not familiar with any characters and want to start from scratch then choose Mario since he is one of the easiest character to start with. And then click on ONE of the "None" which will allow you to either battle a random character from the random slot or you could choose who to play against. Then press the start button.

Reminder every character is different and has different move set.

STEP 6: Maps/Stages
Go to Final Destination and try out your character there and learn their move set.

STEP 7: Learning the Basic Concept
Learning the purpose of the game is very crucial in the game where you need to know in order to win the game. Super Smash Bros is a different fighting game where you do not play against one other person in a little screen box but you could actually fall from the map and lose a stock (In game life points). In this fighting game one does not have a health bar or health points (HP) but it has percentage. The higher the percentage the most likely you are going to lose a stock. So try to not get hit by your opponent. However, just because you are at a low percentage means that you are safe because you can also Suicide at low percent where it will also take a stock as well. You also have 2 jumps WHEN YOU ARE ON THE STAGE or PLATFORM (Except for a few characters ex; Jigglypuff, Kirby and King Dedede). When you are off the stage your character will 1 jump.

STEP 8: Learning the Basic Moves
Learning the basic movements in Smash Bros is very important in order to gain that Muscle Memory where you would start to think less on figuring out the next button you need to press compared to how you are going to outplay your opponent. However, here is a website that has all of the basic fundamental abilities of each character:

Once you reach that website you can find the character you want to play and see all the different abilities that your character has.

STEP 9: Practice!!!
No matter what it is, if it is in Sports, School, Music, or Video Games, practice is very important in order to get better. If you are starting off, playing against Bots/CPUs that will get you at least to understand how to play and the basic mechanic, as well as to help get the muscle memory that you need in order to get better at the game. Once you think can beat a level 1 CPU bot then increase the level to 2 and so on and so on. The bots will get more and more difficult and they are no human but once you feel comfortable then you can face people in For Glory the Online Multiplayer version for Smash Bros.

STEP 10: Discover Your PlayStyle
Knowing yourself and the way you play could potentially increase the amount of times you win. Many times players play style would reflect on a person's behavior, or personality. The way you are in the "Real World" could reflect on the way you play. People who tend to be crazy people tend to play very aggressive going for some crazy plays that hype the crowd. However, some other people like to analyze the game to a scientific point of view (every movement and having the frames calculated), these people tend to be the best Punisher for the one mistake that you might of through. They capitalize on you every moment they have. Now there is the passive play style where they are not playing against your character but more the player, testing your ability to not get frustrated or else you will play right into their hands.

STEP 11: Learning Advance Movements
Once you feel that you got your muscle memory and you are trying to get more in-depth with the game you can start learning the more complicated mechanics like perfect pivoting, jab reset combos and many more. For tutorials in these mechanics you could find them by going to My Smash Corner or the Beefy Smash Doods where they explain in detail the mechanics for every and/or individual characters.

STEP 12: Your Up For the Challenge
Once you feel "Your Body is Reggie" then you should try out your skills in tournament and play against other people who are trying to be The Very Best at this game. You can ask any question regarding your region and your local tourneys in the famous SmashBoards where many players go and ask question, share new techniques and much more.

In conclusion the Super Smash Bros Series in general is an amazing series to play. Super Smash Bros for Wii U is the newest and probably the easiest to get play as of right now. Smash is a very unique game where it diverges off a bit from the typical fighting game style like Marvel v Capcom, or SkullGirls. Smash is a very interesting game for not only me but for the whole Smash community as well.

  1. Your “How to” blog does meet the requirements to be categorized as a technical document, because it is addressed to a particular reader, and it contains both images and words; easing the difficulty of understanding. As someone who owns Super Smash Bros, I understand your instructions and the procedures a bit better than someone who has never picked up a controller. For that very reason, this paring is both beneficial and slightly less useful. Because I’ve already had experienced with the subject, the information provided is not needed. However, this information isn’t too bad for someone who is new to the game or the gaming genre. It would be a shame if people missed out on this game, because unlike other fighting games, this one doesn’t take much to learn. For the duration of the blog, you start from the beginning of getting a copy of the game for yourself all the way to fighting, and that provides people with a clear way to get to the game. As a side note, I will mention that some parts of the blog could use some improvement. For starters the title is a bit off from the information that you’ve provide. I know that you can use the Nintendo 3Ds, but if your title is “How to Get Started with Super Smash Brothers for the WiiU,” then make sure the blog only covers the WiiU, or make some changes by either changing the title or by removing some of the information. There are also some misspelling errors, so make sure to revise the sentences before moving on ahead. The sentences aren’t too many, but make sure to look them over once or twice. Then you move focus away from getting started to picking Mario as your main. I am aware that Mario is the best pick for someone who has never played, but make sure you mention that each character has their own special move set. All in all, the blog has fun to read, but that could just be me being bias, seeing as how I love playing the game.
