mechanical engineer

There is a multitude of ethical responsibilities when it comes to being a mechanical engineer. When working on a new product or an existing one in order to improve it the engineer in question must, of course, have a full understanding of who this product is meant for, the necessary safety precautions, and the cost of the product. When it comes to the ethical responsibility for the consumer's safety, mechanical engineers must take into consideration all the possible failures that may occur because any small misstep may lead to the death of the consumers.

As a future mechanical engineer, I would like to work for a corporation and or company that works with cars and be the person behind the design of the car to make sure it is efficient safe, reasonably priced and of course pleasing to look at. In addition, this field of work has a very high ethical responsibility not just to the company but to the people because if a faulty car model is realized it may result in many injuries and deaths.

In the year 2001, there were many complaints about certain vehicles which were the Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Saturn Ion, Saturn Sky, Pontiac G5, and Pontiac Solstice the company that came under fire for these complaints was GM (General Motors). The reason behind these complaints was due to a faulty ignition switch that would change the vehicle from of the "run" or "on" position which would cause the vehicle to loose to electrical power, enough to turn off the engine causing the vehicle airbags to malfunction as well, So if an accident did indeed occur when the ignition switch would bug out there would be no safety measures to protect the passengers. There were a huge amoint of deaths reported because of this around 124 and 17 lost limbs. This shows how one small mishap may result in the death of many.

Engineers in general must and always test and conclude that a product is saved or the product may take lives. This is why when I become an engineer for cars there will be much pressure when designing and constructing a vehicle because an accident much like what happened to General Motors may occur once more.

  1. A well-composed start. A little short that could have benefit from some imagery. Sorry to see that there was no peer review on this one.
