How to Breed Pokemon for Competitive Use

So, you've beaten the Elite Four already, you've completed the pre-national dex story line as well as the post-national dex story line, and now you're wondering what there is left for you to do in the Pokemon world. For some of us, going to the competitive scene is the answer, but most don't know where to start and what to do. For all purposes, I will be showcasing how to breed a Pokemon for competitive use in the latest generation and the latest game, Sun and Moon. Without further ado, let's begin constructing a team that can beat some of the top players.

Assuming you already have a team in mind, here are the steps you would take to begin constructing a high tier team with good IV's as well as the right nature depending on how you want to use that Pokemon.

STEP 1: GET A 6IV DITTO (if possible)

A 6IV Ditto isn't necessary but is highly recommended because of an item called "Destiny Knot" which allows a Pokemon to pass down it's IV's. The more perfect the Ditto you have, the more perfect the offspring you will receive. A Ditto is also recommended because of it's ability to be able to breed with any Pokemon which makes making any team relatively easier.

STEP 2: BREED THE POKEMON OF YOUR CHOOSING

We won't be breeding for perfect IV's at the moment. Instead, we will be breeding for the correct nature of our choosing. The nature of a Pokemon allows it to have an advantage for one stat while having a deficit for another. For the sake of simplicity, we will be breeding a Larvitar that has the "modest" nature. Once we have obtained a Larvitar with the proper nature, we want to equip an "Everstone" onto that Larvitar. This allows the nature of the offspring to be the same as the parent which is what we want.

STEP 3: CONSECUTIVELY BREED UNTIL A 6IV IS RECEIVED

Here comes the longest and probably the toughest part of all: the actual breeding and hatching of the Pokemon. Thankfully, in the latest installments of Pokemon, the addition of Poke Pelago helps make hatching eggs easier. However, there are two ways of hatching Pokemon: the more traditional way per say and the new Poke Pelago way. If you have the time, the more traditional way is a much better optional as it is much more efficient. You hold 5 eggs at a time and have a Pokemon with the ability "Magma Armor" or "Flame Body" which reduces the amount of time needed for an egg to hatch.

If you don't have that much time but want to hatch a hefty amount of eggs simultaneously, then the Poke Pelago way would be much more preferred. Because you can hatch 18 eggs at once and even reduce the amount of time needed for each egg to hatch via pokebeans, this way allows one to effectively hatch as many eggs as possible without spending so much time playing.

Either way works because the end goal is going to be the same, which is getting that perfect Larvitar.
If you're lucky, you'll receive it in a few eggs. However, this process can be quite lengthy and quite tedious as well. But in the end, you'll be rocking it out with an amazing Pokemon that has the perfect stats as well as the perfect nature.

STEP 4: RINSE AND REPEAT

After you've done this for one Pokemon, you now have the wonderful privilege of doing it for the other 5 Pokemon that you want on your team. HOORAY! However, once you've done it one time, the other times will be easier but also much more frustrating and painful as well. Good luck and good hunting.

  1. Although I don't have a direct relationship with the subject, my realation would be a new player in the game of Pokémon. Since I have very little experience with the game, this blog will definitely provide some insight as to how I would move forward with breeding my own Pokémons. This blog proves it's usefulness within my previous answer. There are many players out there that are afraid to try new things because they don't know how to start. This blog will provide many new time users with the guidance necessary. Because I am a new user, some of the information provided was a little confusing. I think it would help if you would break it down into further components. I like to say I am a very open minded person, so while reading this blog I felt intrigued by its content.

  2. While I appreciate your comments on breaking it down into further components, this blog was meant to be as simple as possible for someone who's a casual player looking to go towards the competitive scene. If I broke it down into further components, it might be a bit more difficult to follow and while it would be fun and easy for me, it might be harder for others. So while I appreciate your suggestion, I believe keeping it the way it is would be best. Thank you though!

  3. Eric is probably right that, at least to anybody playing Pokemon Sun and Moon, this is the perfect amount of information. However, as a reader with no experience with those games, I am just curious about a couple details and learning about them would just be fun. Like how do you get "Poke Pelago?"

There are some minor errors (such as your use of "per se"), but nothing too distracting.
